Industrial gas meters

The company’s metrology department is often tasked with monitoring and measuring gas flow during the operation of facilities with varying levels of capacity, such as gas distribution stations or gas supply systems. A special device is used for gas metering—an industrial gas flow meter—which allows for the determination of the mass flow rate of gas mixtures through real-time measurements.

Key Considerations for Measuring Gas Flow in Industrial Settings

Regular monitoring of petroleum and natural gas, sulfur dioxide, propane, nitrogen, acetylene, methane, oxygen, and other gas mixtures allows for the timely detection of deviations from normal levels and the prevention of hazardous situations at industrial facilities, ensuring the safety of personnel and the environment.
To determine gas flow using flow meters, a comprehensive metering system is employed, which includes the use of basic measuring devices:

  • computers;
  • sensors;
  • resistance temperature transducers.

Types of Industrial Flow Meters and Measurement Methods

Measuring gas flow is an important and technically complex task. Since industrial processes have different requirements for measuring equipment, gas flow meters are selected based on the specific characteristics of the production process and the measurement methods used.
Modern manufacturers produce several main types of industrial gas flow meters:

  • Rotary. Mechanical flow meters in which two synchronously rotating rotors divide the gas flow into equal volumes. The number of revolutions is converted into the measured volume. Such flow meters are widely used in commercial and industrial natural gas metering.
  • Turbine. The operating principle of these meters is based on the rotation of a turbine driven by the gas flow. The rotational speed is detected by an inductive or optical sensor and is proportional to the flow velocity. Straighteners are used to stabilize the flow. Turbine gas flow meters are characterized by high accuracy under stable conditions.
  • Vortex. These meters measure the frequency of vortices formed behind a flow straightener installed in the gas stream. The vortex formation frequency is proportional to the flow velocity, and the flow rate is calculated based on this data. They are suitable for various media and a wide temperature range.
  • Ultrasonic. These meters operate by measuring the time difference between the ultrasonic signal traveling with and against the flow direction. There are both in-line and clamp-on meters. Sensors can be installed at different angles depending on the measurement configuration (V-, Z-, or W-shaped). They provide high accuracy in measuring gas flow rate and are suitable for large-diameter pipelines.

Advantages of ultrasonic meters

Ultrasonic flow meters are among the most reliable and accurate commercial devices for measuring the flow of gas mixtures. What sets them apart:

  • ease of installation and maintenance;
  • high metrological performance;
  • self-diagnostic functionality (the electronics perform continuous checks);
  • the flow meters operate at high pressure;
  • the ability to measure gas flows at different velocities.
